Do you only think of clothing when you hear the word modesty?
Modesty is not limited only to clothing. Modesty is the way we talk, walk, or act.
The way we dress:
The way we dress is one of the most popular topics in women’s culture because we are always talking about what women wear.
- Did you see what she was wearing?
- I cannot believe she wore that!
Instead of criticizing another sister, we should be comfortable addressing it with her...perhaps she is not aware that what she is wearing is not ok.
But what about yourself? Is your shirt so low your cleavage attracts the eyes of your neighbor, your boss, or perhaps the men at church?
The Bible says we are the temple of the Holy Spirit; we honor God with our bodies. (1 Corinthians 6:19) Are you honoring God with your body? What are you saying with what you wear? And how you wear it?
Modesty is not only how we dress it’s also how we talk.
Modesty comes from the inside out. What are the reasons behind the things we say or do?
Is the heart pure?
Is our heart sincere?
Can our heart be trusted?
What does the bible say about our hearts?
In Jeremiah 17:9 (NIV) says: "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?"
If the Bible says we can’t trust our hearts then why are we quick to submit to our feelings?
Are our hearts lacking something?
Are we trying to fulfill it with attention?
What kind of attention are you seeking?
Are you flirting with your friend’s husband or pouring your heart out to your co-worker because you feel lonely? Luke 6:45 NIV says, ...the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. What you speak has already been premeditated, do not allow your deceitful heart to fool you.
Our intentions must always be pure. For our purposes to be genuine, we must be connected to the one who fulfills all our needs.
Philippians 4:19 says God fulfills ALL our needs. This means emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually.
When we feel lonely and empty, we must seek God and not man.
Are you dressing yourself up for church but thinking of someone specifically?
Are you playful with the usher in the parking lot?
Or are you making eye contact too long with a man that is not your husband?
We aren’t called to draw attention to ourselves but to draw attention to God.
A woman’s mind, body, and heart is for the enjoyment of one man - her husband. God asks us not to give all men the privilege of viewing what belongs only to the man who will spend the rest of his life with us.
I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly, and discreetly 1 Timothy 2:9
Remember, modesty is not only what clothes you wear…. it is an attitude of the heart; a statement of holiness about your entire life; and a part of being a "living sacrifice," pleasing and acceptable to God.
Romans 12:2 says,
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
What does modesty mean to you?
I enjoy exploring neighborhoods and visiting coffee shops. I have a heart for building community. I love to learn from everyone I come across.
